How can coconut oil support our brains both in our youths and as we continue to age. Coconut oil is a rich source of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), which are a type of fatty acid that can be easily metabolized and used as a source of energy by the brain. Research has shown that MCTs may have potential benefits for brain health and cognitive function.
One study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease in 2014 found that a drink containing MCTs improved cognitive function in older adults with memory problems. The study was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 20 participants with mild cognitive impairment. The participants were given either a drink containing MCTs or a placebo drink, and their cognitive function was assessed using a range of tests. The researchers found that the participants who consumed the MCT drink showed significant improvement in cognitive function compared to those who received the placebo.
Another study published in the journal Neurobiology of Aging in 2004 found that MCTs may improve cognitive function in memory-impaired adults. The study was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 20 subjects with memory impairment who were given either a drink containing MCTs or a placebo drink. The researchers found that the participants who consumed the MCT drink showed significant improvement in cognitive function compared to those who received the placebo.
A more recent study published in the Journal of Nutrition, Health & Aging in 2015 found that MCTs may have potential benefits for cognitive function in healthy older adults. The study was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 44 healthy adults aged 65 and over. The participants were given either a drink containing MCTs or a placebo drink, and their cognitive function was assessed using a range of tests. The researchers found that the participants who consumed the MCT drink showed improved cognitive function compared to those who received the placebo.
While more research is needed to fully understand the potential benefits of coconut oil for brain function, these studies suggest that MCTs may have beneficial effects on cognitive function in both healthy and impaired individuals.
