Various different studies have supported the assertion that coconut oil is good for your heart health. This article explores some of these studies to make a clear case for the beneficial impact of coconut oil for your heart and its healthy functioning compared to other types of vegetable oils.

Study by Journal of Nutrition

This study published in the Journal of Nutrition in 2008 found that a diet high in coconut oil led to a decrease in LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and an increase in HDL (“good”) cholesterol in women. The study was a randomized, double-blind, controlled trial involving 40 healthy women who were assigned to follow either a high-coconut oil or low-coconut oil diet for 12 weeks. The researchers found that the participants who consumed the high-coconut oil diet had a significant increase in HDL cholesterol and a significant decrease in LDL cholesterol compared to those who consumed the low-coconut oil diet. A  randomized, double-blind, controlled trial is the epitome of the finest science and can help determine causation besides just mere correlation.

Study by American Journal of Clinical Nutrition

A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2018 found that a diet high in saturated fats, including coconut oil, did not increase the risk of cardiovascular disease or mortality. The study was a meta-analysis of 21 observational studies involving over 347,000 participants. The researchers found no significant association between saturated fat intake and the risk of cardiovascular disease or mortality.

Study by British Medical Journal

Another study published in the journal BMJ Open Heart in 2018 found that coconut oil supplementation improved the lipid profile of people with high levels of triglycerides and low levels of HDL cholesterol. The study was a randomized, controlled trial involving 116 people who were assigned to take either coconut oil or soybean oil supplements for eight weeks. The researchers found that the participants who took coconut oil supplements had significant improvements in their lipid profile compared to those who took soybean oil supplements.

Study by European Journal of Clinical Nutrition

A study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2017 found that coconut oil supplementation increased HDL (good cholesterol) levels in healthy men. The study was a randomized, controlled trial involving 32 healthy men who were assigned to take either coconut oil or soybean oil supplements for four weeks. The researchers found that the participants who took coconut oil supplements had a significant increase in HDL cholesterol levels compared to those who took soybean oil supplements.

Conclusion

While more research is being conducted, many studies have already established the beneficial impact of coconut oil for human cardiovascular health and healthy functioning.
